Volunteerism is a key component of MWA-NY. The Outreach Committee seeks to support organizations and activities that promote reading and writing across the region. In past years, we have offered our support to organizations such as Girls Write Now and Books at Home. Girls Write Now mentors underserved young women in NYC to find their voice through writing. Books at Home puts books in the hands of inner-city youth in Trenton, NJ.
Since 2016, the primary activity of the Outreach Committee has been to administer the Leon B. Burstein Scholarship for aspiring mystery writers. In addition, members of the chapter continue to volunteer their time and talent in their local communities. Members who participate or wish to become involved in activities that promote reading and writing in their community are encouraged to contact the Outreach Committee at outreach@mwany.org. Community organizers interested in having MWA-NY work with your organization are also encouraged to contact the Outreach Committee.
